MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface)

MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface)

MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) is a messaging architecture that allows client programs to become email messaging-enabled by invoking MAPI subsystem routines interfacing with specific messaging servers. While MAPI is designed to be protocol-independent, it is commonly used with MAPI over HTTP or MAPI/RPC, protocols utilized by Microsoft Outlook to communicate with Microsoft Exchange Server.

MAPI-compatible applications typically feature a “Send Mail” or “Send” option in the File pulldown menu. Selecting one of these options sends a request to a MAPI server.

Advantages of MAPI:

1. IMAP supports both online and offline modes of operation.

2. E-mail clients using IMAP generally retain messages on the server until the user explicitly deletes them.

3. Allows multiple clients to manage the same mailbox.

4. Provides faster reconnection times after communication breaks.

5. Offers a 70% faster connection to Exchange.

6. Facilitates future innovation in authentication by utilizing an HTTP-based protocol, such as MFA.
